Many people who refer to themselves as members of the so-called underground believe that mainstreamers are tasteless and brainwashed by popular mass media; if something is well known or popular, it is automatically "lobotomized corporate claptrap". Though this can be true, there are many exceptions. Mainstream music fans, on the other hand, believe that little to no media exposure for a band means that the band sucks. Other people, who like what they like whether it's popular or not, consider both groups to be douchebags for denying themselves potential enjoyment for a goofy image complex that they won't give a crap about when they have to get a job and move out of mom's basement."

Who are the MPAA?
The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) is an American trade association that represents the six big Hollywood studios. It was founded in 1922 as the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA) to advance the business interests of its members. In its formative years it took on the role of devising guidelines for film content which resulted in the creation of the Production Code, and currently administers the MPAA film rating system.
More recently, the MPAA has advocated for the motion picture and television industry through lobbying to protect creative content from piracy and for the removal of trade barriers. The MPAA has long worked to curb copyright infringement, including recent attempts to limit the sharing of copyrighted works via peer-to-peer file-sharing networks. Former Democratic Senator Chris Dodd is the Chairman and CEO.

assingment 26 unit 1 powerpoint prep.
Slid one.
What is an Auteur?
A auteur is a director but not any director you know its a certain directors work by what they do eg use camera angle, colour wash, actors.
a filmmaker whose individual style and complete control over allelements of production give a film its personal and unique stamp.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/auteur
Side 2.
Mise en scene.
Mise en scene is a french word its means everything in the frame. The characters are out side a cafe having a conversation then all the props start to explode. The lighting is very natural. The depth of focus is just on the characters.
Mise en scène encompasses the most recognizable attributes of a film – the setting and the actors; it includes costumes and make-up, props, and all the other natural and artificial details that characterize the spaces filmed. The term is borrowed from a French theatrical expression, meaning roughly “put into the scene”. In other words, mise-en-scène describes the stuff in the frame and the way it is shown and arranged. We have organized this page according to four general areas: setting, lighting, costume and staging. At the end we have also included some special effects that are closely related to mise-en-scène.

Slide 3.
Sound.
Non diegetic
We get a good use of non diegetic sound track in this scene when the props start to explode. This make it clear that the characters are in a dream.
Sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action:
Dialogue
In this scene Christopher Nolan is trying to show realism with the conversation between the two characters.
Diegetic
We get a good use of diegetic sound when the coffee mug starts to shake but you can say this is non diegetic sound.
Sound whose source is visible on the screen or whose source is implied to be present by the action of the film:
Slide 4
Comparison ( Inception and Skyfall )
We get a wide two shot so we can see where the characters are going and what it looks like. Good use of depth of focus so we can see what they are wearing and also we see that the characters are wet from coming out the water but also look confused. This creates more tension for the audience and keeps them focused.

Non diegetic
We get a good use of non diegetic sound track in this scene when the props start to explode. This make it clear that the characters are in a dream.
Sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action:
- narrator's commentary
- sound effects which is added for the dramatic effect
- mood music
The distinction between diegetic or non-diegetic sound depends on our understanding of the conventions of film viewing and listening. We know of that certain sounds are represented as coming from the story world, while others are represented as coming from outside the space of the story events. A play with diegetic and non-diegetic conventions can be used to create ambiguity (horror), or to surprise the audience (comedy).
Dialogue
In this scene Christopher Nolan is trying to show realism with the conversation between the two characters.
conversation between two or more persons.
2.
the conversation between characters in a novel, drama, etc.
3.
an exchange of ideas or opinions on a particular issue, especially apolitical or religious issue, with a view to reaching an amicableagreement or settlement.
Diegetic
We get a good use of diegetic sound when the coffee mug starts to shake but you can say this is non diegetic sound.
Sound whose source is visible on the screen or whose source is implied to be present by the action of the film:
- voices of characters
- sounds made by objects in the story
- music represented as coming from instruments in the story space ( = source music)
Digetic sound can be either on screen or off screen depending on whatever its source is within the frame or outside the frame.
Another term for diegetic sound is actual sound

Log and transfer.
The illustrations in this chapter show examples of
the Log and Transfer window ingesting P2 footage. The window may display
slightly different features when ingesting other video formats.
When working with video cameras that record to a memory card, you will use a process called logging and transferring to get the footage into Final Cut. Logging and transferring is the process of extracting the footage into an editable format. Most video cameras record video into a compress format like H.264 or AVCHD, which is difficult or impossible to edit natively. Logging and transferring will allow you to ingest footage into Final Cut Pro in a format that is easier for Final Cut to edit.

focal range. Depth of field.Rack of focus.
Focal Range.
When choosing a new lens, or considering a camera with one built into it, the main consideration we have is its focal length. How much we can fit into a image, and how far we can zoom into distant details are determined by this, and together with its aperture it determines what types of photography are available to us.
Depth of field.
In optics, particularly as it relates to film and photography, depth of field (DOF) is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image. Although a lens can precisely focus at only one distance at a time, the decrease in sharpness is gradual on each side of the focused distance, so that within the DOF, the unsharpness is imperceptible under normal viewing conditions.
Rack focus
A rack focus in filmmaking and television production is the practice of changing the focus of the lens during a shot. The term can refer to small or large changes of focus. If the focus is shallow, then the technique becomes more noticeable. In professional films, a camera assistant called a focus puller is responsible for rack focusing. In his documentary film, The Sinister Saga of Making "The Stunt Man" the director Richard Rush claims he developed the technique in the 1960s. In the commentary to Firefly, Visual Effects Supervisor Loni Peristere comments that rack focus has been taboo in recent cinematography because such shots cannot be "repaired" in post production.
